The City of Lloydminster reminds citizens to remain clear of stormwater retention ponds this winter. Ice thickness is not monitored on retention ponds with the exception of the lake at Bud Miller Park.
Although the water’s surface may appear frozen, continual water movement and fluctuating water levels contribute to potential dangers. The rise and fall of outdoor temperatures also play a factor in unstable ice surfaces.
The ponds in the community are stormwater facilities designed to help prevent flooding. Each of these ponds has an inlet and outlet, connecting one pond to the next, meaning water constantly flows underneath the ice surface, leading to unpredictable and dangerous ice conditions throughout the winter.
Please obey all posted signage. The City urges everyone to take extra precautions, ensuring children and pets remain a safe distance from stormwater ponds.
If someone falls through the ice, do not go on the ice to attempt a rescue. Call 911 immediately for help
